Retro Game Review: Child of Light

This game is simply gorgeous from the visual aesthetic of a water color painting to the haunting sound track to the story of Aurora and her quest to save her father from death.
This gem from Ubi Soft Montreal studio in is a perfect example how how small and simple doesn't always equate to a less impressive experience, sometimes less is more!
There is beauty throughout this game from the art design to the dialog between Aurora and the NPC's and party members to the games story!
The battle system is very reminisent to old school Final Fantasy games, when Aurora comes in contact with an enemy mob the screen goes to a battle screen where the enemy's (up to 3) show up on the right side and the party members on the left. There is a ATB system with a single bar with avatars representing all characters in the battle. Each character's avatar moves at different speeds till it reaches the "casting point" once the avatar reaches that point the speed slows down till it reaches the end of the ATB bar, then the character performs an action, if the attack hits the recipients turn could be interrupted sending the player or enemy back to the beginning  of the ATB bar. So the player isn't just passivly waiting for their turn there's some strategy involved in which characters you keep in battle. You can swap out any character during battles once the character reaches the "casting" point on the ATB bar, which will save your ass during some particularly difficult battles.
The level up system is also very simplistic but has adequate depth to allow the player to feel like they have control over the characters progression, you earn skill points during battles and can use the points on the characters skill tree to upgrade MP, HP, offensive and/or defensive abilities and spells. Each character has their own individual skill tree with character specific skills so building a well rounded party or a highly offensive party is up to the player how they prefer to tackle the battles.

Child of Light also has a crafting element with gems called Oculi,  you can think of them like the materia system from FFVII they are gemstones that can be attached 1 per item (weapon, armor, accessory) to enhance it's attributes such as adding elemental damage to attacks or enhance chance of evasion or increase max HP/ MP,
There are 3 tiers of Oculi;
Base Oculi: Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald
Crafted Oculi: Tourmaline, Amethyst, Citrine
Advanced Crafted Oculi: Diamond, Onyx, Spinel

The characters in Child of Light are all unique and varied enough to stand on there own,
Finn is a Capili (dwarf) who is the equivalent to FF's Black Mage
Genovefa  is a Piscean  who would be the equivalent to FF Tactics Time Mage
Igniculus is a floating orb of light that can assist Aurora by healing with his light and blinding enemies which stops them in their tracks. I'd say Iggy would be the equivalent to FF's Carbuncle.
Norah is Aurora's step sister and she reveals herself to also be NOX her skills also make her equivalent to a Time Mage
Oengus is a Kategida warrior and is pretty much a tank so we'll say he's the Knight in CoL
Robert is a Bolmus (mouse) his primary weapon is a Bow and Arrow that can inflict status ailments on enemies he's like a Archer from FF Tactics
Rubella is a Aerostati that specializes in healing....we all know what she would be in the FF realm
Tristis is Rubella's brother and he casts support spells on the party.....red mage.
CoL was a gorgeous game in so many aspects, I enjoyed the simplicity of it which brought me back to a time when RPG's ruled consoles.
If you enjoyed JRPG's back in the day you'll truly appreciate Child of Light.

Mighty No. 9: WiP Gameplay foootage

The game is still about a year off, and it's really starting to look good! From the ashes of Mega Man rises Mighty No. 9!
I really hope this game sells gangbusters so Capcom can see the error in the way they handled the Megaman franchise.

My copy of FFX/X-2 HD remaster Collectors Edition

I'm not one who goes for the special/collectors editions often but when I heard about the collectors Edition of the FFX/X-2 HD remaster I really wanted it. On March 18 I received my Collectors Edition of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD remaster and she's a beaut! The games come on a single BD in a hardcover book with a nice protective sleeve.
On the inside cover are 5 beautiful lithographs and the track listing of soundtrack for both games which comes on the second BD.
The book is prefaced with a note from producer Yoshinori Kitase and is followed by gorgeous art from both games with notes from Toshitaka Matsuda! I'm really looking forward to revisiting Spira and playing X-2 for the first time...and getting the Platinum Trophy's....Now I just need to get a new PS3!
This is a worthy addition to any fan of the Final Fantasy franchise.

Ultra Street Fighter IV New Stages

I watched a video from JAEPO on youtube today and got my first glimpse at one of the new stages for USFIV...
Really??????UGHH
Not good I've had to use this gif twice in a weeks time!
Capcom, I lurves ya but this is......well....the gif says it all. This stage DOES NOT WORK IN STREET FIGHTER!

EDIT: Here are all the new stages being cut and paste from SFXT

I like the Mad Gear Hideout, Blast Furnace, Half Pipe and Pitstop 109 stages!
Mad Gear Hideout obviously will be for Cody, Guy, Rolento, Hugo and Poison
Blast Furnace works perfectly for Zangief
Half Pipe is great for Yun and Yang
Pitstop 109 would be ideal for Sodom....but alas he's not in USFIV. Maybe Capcom can add him in the background!
As far as Jurassic Era Research Facility and Cosmic Elevator...as I stated above THEY DON'T WORK WITHIN the Street Fighter (proper) universe at all.
If we're gonna be stuck with dinosaurs they should throw Regina in the stage
And Comic Elevator......last I checked the game is called Street Fighter, martial artist's travel all over the world to test their fighting skills against other fighters....Why are we in SPACE!!!!?????

CastleVania Lords of Shadow2 Dracula

Here's the latest trailer for CastleVania: Lords of Shadow 2, we've seen alot of the footage before such as Alucard, Trevor Belmont, Marie (I thought she was dead), Victor Belmont, Carmilla's back....she took quite an ass whooping from Gabriel in the first game, but there is definitely some new stuff to glimpse like Satan and a new character named Raisa Volkova and another new character The Toy maker.
I need to get a new PS3 ASAP!
Oh and Krogenar....if you still have this first game, I really recommend you give it another go....it's a great game!

USFIV + YouTube

Finally! With every iteration of Street Fighter IV we've gotten closer to this and finally I will now be able to upload my replays directly to my YouTube channel!

Free Swims 14 games for 2014

Here's my annual list of upcoming games that I feel are must have's (for me) in a rough order of most wanted to least. What are your 14 most wanted games for 2014?

1. Ultra Street Fighter IV
Simply put I have been a fan of the franchise since 91, and just enjoy the game, pure honest to goodness multiplayer that requires actual skill to be good at.

 2. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zero's/The Phantom Pain

This is another favorite franchise of mine, chronologically Ground Zeroes takes place after MGS Peace Walker, which was a great game that unforunately flew under many gamers radar. I got stuck at the extra ops Gear Rex Strikes back on the deck of Mother Base...my MSF forces were very strong but regrettably I couldn't finish all the extra ops because none of my friends had the game do do the missions in co op. From the info I've heard MGS V will continue with the same game play style.
I'm really more excited to see more of the story of Big Boss unfold.

3. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD remaster
I began playing Final Fantasy with VII....I was hooked after that! FFX was an amazing game with a powerful, emotional story. I never played X-2 so I'm looking forward to reliving my adventures in Spira and playing X-2 for the first time, and getting  those trophies.....yeah I'm a trophy whore.

4. Final Fantasy XV
I've been waiting for this game for what seems like forever! When I first saw the trailers for this back in 2009, when it was VS XIII I wanted it more than FFXIII but then it faded into obscurity and many feared the worst, that is until last years E3!

                                                                                                            5. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
I loved the first game, regardless of what people said about the game's engine being similar to God of War. The story was inspired,  the environments and sound effects were gorgeous, and the voice acting was also quite impressive with the talents of Patrick Stewart. The bosses of LoS were amazing especially the Stone Golem!
This is another franchise I've enjoyed since the NES original!

6. inFAMOUS Second Son
I got into inFAMOUS a little late in the game but like Sucker Punches other series staring Sly Cooper, the inFAMOUS series has improved with each new title and inFAMOUS Second Son looks amazing!

7. Watch Dogs
The game looks to bring sand box multi player to the next level...it looks like it could be a game changer with the hacking mechanics altering things throughout the city....we'll see come April.

8. Destiny
I'll admit an MMO/ FPS/ RPG in space sounds amazing and having Bungie and Activision working together how can this game fail!?

9. Mighty No 9
Meet Beck the spiritual successor of Rock...aka Megaman. Since Capcom has pretty much disowned the blue bomber it was great to see Inafume san using kickstarter to keep the legend alive!

10. Mirror's Edge 2
I bought the first Mirror's Edge years after it's original release, it's a FPR (First Person Runner) and is unlike any other game I've ever played, it's also not easy! I really like the visual design of the game...this is yet another example of a new unique type of game that most gamers didn't give a chance because it wasn't a FPS.
Parkour of the roofs of skyscrapers....something I'll never do and have no interest in trying out side of a video game.

11. Walking Dead: Season 2

Episodic games done right...that is all.

12. The Order 1886

I have a good feeling about this game, I know next to nothing about it but it's coming from Sony Santa Monica Studios (God of War) and Ready at Dawn (former Naughty Dog members). The story sounds interesting!

13. Kingdom Hearts III

God how many years have fans waited for this sequel! I'd get this one for my wife and son.

14. Evil Within
This truly looks like the best scary game since the original Resident Evil! The trailer was very disturbing, it reminded

RIP 80gig PS3 Feb 2008 - Jan 2014

Uncanny timing, I'm writing my recap of the games I've played during the 7th generation...mostly PS3 and BAM YLOD strikes like lightning....at first I thought the controller died, but alas the dreaded light showed next time I tried powering up the console.
This wouldn't be such a catastrophe if I didn't have 8 years of game saves for over 50 games!
I have stated previously that I will not be getting a PS4 until Christmas 2014 or beyond ;) because I have plenty of gaming left to do on my PS3....but this had me seriously considering just moving on, but something keeps nagging me, I won't be able to play these brilliant games on the PS4 and the games I bought on the PlayStation Store via the PS3...digital games mind you from the SAME PlayStation store as the PS3 are not playable on the PS4.....WHAT THE DEUCE!!!??
So I have made up my mind to buy a new PS3....now comes the challenge....a challenge I fully embrace!
One does not simply swap out a 2.5" WD SATA II 500gb 5400rpm HDD from a dead PS3 to a new PS3.....to simple!
I must collect a new PS3 ($199) a new 2.5" WD SATA II 500gb 5400rpm HDD ($40), a hair drier with a cool air setting ($???), and an extra Ethernet cable...
Once all supplies are in hand I will attempt to resurrect my YLOD PS3 and perform a data transfer to the new PS3...May the Force be with me!
I'll post the results of my endeavors soon...

Here's the video's of the Super's and Ultra's for Ultra Street Fighter IV. I'm not feeling the red focus and the Double Ultra's that were previously revealed by combofiend but what ever. I actually started playing AE again a week or two ago...amazing how fast you loose your mojo in this game! I've also been playing a little 3rd Strike with some guys from Unity. Next week we may get some HDR matches in also!

AquaPazza: Console Release Trailer

I've played a decent amount of fighting games in my life from Yae Ar Kung Fu to Time Killers and have pretty much stuck with Street Fighter throughout the years. Ive actually been interested in AquaPazza for about a year and I was happily surprised the other night when I was on the PS Store and saw that it had finally come stateside for $29.99!
I'd be lying if I said I knew anything about any of the characters but from past trailers 2 look like Ranka and Cheryl Nome from Macross Frontier...good enough for me. Plus having a Siberian tiger fight along side you!!! C'mon that's a heluva lot better than T Hawks lame ass eagle!
Maybe AquaPazza will make it to EVO2014...

My Los Santos Picture Log Volume 5

My on going adventures in Los Santos continue! This week I bought the old dock at Paleto Cove for $250,000, and it comes with a submersible!

So I took my yellow submarine and collected all the nuclear waste sitting on the sea floor around LS....that was actually very profitable, Michael now has over a million bucks! While poor Trevor only has $89,000...
But don't feel too bad for Trevor he has recently moved into the Vanilla Unicorn!

Oh and my son was kind enough to return my car....complete with new rims....so classy!

Oh and last night I found this love note on the bedroom mirror...
