Robotech movie rights now in Sony's hands...YACK DECULTCHA

So last night I read that Sony now holds the screen rights for Robotech, Tobey Maguire tried and failed to get the "ship" off the ground, now Robotech is in the hands of three gentlemen who produced 300.

I feel like every few years I'm posting my trepidation about a live action/Hollywood produced Robotech film.
I'm not going to regurgitate my rants about how Robotech pales in comparison to the source material...Super Dimension Fortress Macross.
If interested you can read my thoughts here and here.
Regrettably, I feel now that Sony has the rights this train wreck is inevitable, fortunately I got off the Robotech train years ago, but this movie I fear is going to be a HUGE injustice to the source material and will barely scratch the surface of the heart of the Macross story.
I doubt we'll get any history of the Unification Wars and the events leading up to crash on South Ataria Island.
I doubt we'll hear anything about the Supervision Army.
I highly doubt we'll hear about the Protoculture! Although if Sony wants to make this a franchise they definitely need to include the sub plot of the three micloned Zentradi spies Conda, Warera and Loli that infiltrate the Macross to learn about human culture.
I doubt we'll have a real Japanese actress (that can sing) play the role of Lynn Minmay,
I doubt we'll have the main character named Hikaru Ichijo
I doubt we'll have the character Roy Focker, I hope we do and I may be in the minority but I would prefer if he dies like in DYRL not in SDFM.
Bridge bunnies better be in the movies!
Captain Global, Claudia LaSalle, and Misa Hayase all must be in this movie absolutely no exeptions! And I am casting Hayley Atwell (yes agent Carter) as Misa, Danai Gurira as Cluadia, and Gary Oldman as Captain Global....
I absolutely can't see this Robotech Macross film being done in one single movie! If they're gonna do it right IT HAS TO BE 3 MOVIES!!!!
The first movie should begin during the Unification Wars up to the Macross returns to Earth.
The second movie should begin right where the first ends and conclude with Britai and Exedol defecting and joining forces with Global and the SDF-1
The third movie needs to basically cover episodes 27 - 36 the remnants of Humanity and the surviving Zentradi dealing with the early days of co existence up until Quamzin's final suicide attack on the Macross.
And then the fateful final meeting of Hikaru, Minmay and Misa.
Then after the credits show the Megaroad departing earth as a certain Galactic Idol performs Ai Oboete Imasu ka?? for a packed concert

Don't Fuck this up Sony! Macross has the potential to eclipse Star Wars.....

Tobey Maguire must be stopped! Macross Fans must unite to stop this train wreck!

My all time favorite Anime Series is once again being threatened by Hollywood! Super Dimensional Fortress Macross is a timeless story of a giant interstellar battle fortress that crashes on South Ataria Island in the South Pacific in the year 1999. For the next decade humanity attempts to unite under the formation of U.N. government and rebuild the ship.
During the ships inauguration in 2009 Hikaru Ichjiyo comes to the celebration in his little civilian aircraft at his best friend Roy Fockers' request. During the celebration Earth is attacked by an Alien race know as the Zentradi, Hikaru rescues Lynn Minmay, a young Japanese girl who works at her aunts Chinese restaurant during the assault.
In a desperate attempt to save the Earth The Captain of the Macross orders the crew to activate the ships untested fold system to the moon, and divert the attackers attention away from Earth.
Things don't go as planned and the when the Macross exits the fold they find they're on the edge of the solar system and  due to their proximity to the surface of the Earth they have brought South Ataria Island with them into the icy void of space! The civilians are rescued and brought aboard the Macross...they're new home. During the fold Hikaru and Minmay were also caught in the field and now Hikaru must pilot his small aircraft into the huge Macross before all his oxygen seeps out of his plane.
These are the events that set the stage for the most amazing Space Opera I have ever seen, and in my opinion eclipses the Star Wars Trilogy.

As a child I did not get to enjoy this amazing show, I got Harmony Gold's Robotech...a mediocre English dub of the above show cut and paste with two other completely unrelated anime series to create a similar yet unfaithful trilogy. The first act is basically SDFM with some alterations to make the second and third acts make some sense.
It wasn't till many years later when I bought Macross Plus at Suncoast Video (I miss that store!) that I did a little research and discovered I had been bamboozled! I found macross world and found out just how far the rabbit hole went with the legal war between Big West and Harmony Gold.

So the news that Warner Brothers has found a director for the Live Action adaptation of  robotech has made me very sad, because I know it is gonna be a Michael Bay style bastardization of a mediocre retelling of an amazing AMAZING Sci Fi Love Story set against the back drop of war in Space against an Alien race.
And every time I hear about this movie Tobey Maguire's name is in the story, so I have to assume he is a fan of Robotech and I can only pray that he knows about Super Dimensional Fortress Macross!

Robotech Movie

With the success of 2007's live action Transformers movie it was inevitable that Hollywood would push their luck and attempt to tap another resource....the great eye of Hollywood has turned it's attention to 80's animated shows. GI Joe is on the way to a theater near you and the defender of the galaxy; Voltron is rumored to be on the way along with He-man, and the Smurfs!

Regrettibly so is Robotech, one of my earliest introductions to the wonderful world of anime. I first got word of this back in Sept. 2007 http://www.superheroflix.com/news/NE5Fq875B8XR88 and I figured it would remain on the back burner until the idea fizzled away, unfortunately new information has recently surfaced about Warner Bro's hiring Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to pen a script, the project originally had Lawrence Kasdan writting the script. I'm almost positive Kasdan has never heard of Robotech, but I feel he'd produce something better than the two guys responsible for the Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Smallville...

I have no hope that this movie will do the source material (Super Dimenstional Fortress Macross) any justice at all, the fact that Warner Bro's is making a silver screen adaptation of an adaptation of three completely separate anime by a company that shouldn't hold any rights to the Macross franchise speaks volumes to this project. Tobey Maguire as Rick Hunter (Hikaru Ichijo for the uninformed) DECULTCHA!!!

If I hear Lynn Minmay sing "we will win", I will get up and demand a refund!

If your interested in this movie and don't know the difference between Macross and Robotech please go to http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=228 and learn! It will open your eyes to the difference between the Original work and a second rate mashup of three separate works with some glaring discrepancies in the story, characters and plot.

Game Review: Robotech: Battlecry

Change or die.
Robotech Battlecry will have fans of the HG anime feeling a bit nostalgic. I'll admit I bought this title simply because I grew up watching the show and the idea of piloting a veritech, fighting the Zentradi was exciting. The games cell shading art style seemed appropriate and was relatively fresh, only a handful of other games, including Sly Cooper used it.
I soon realized my nostalgic feelings were misplaced, what held true for the anime held true here as well. Robotech is not Macross, the story of Macross is what I really enjoyed....and later when I learned about the "reimagining" of Macross by HG I learned there was a major difference.
There is a lead character, Jack Archer and his wing man Izzy Randal. Battlecry also has the occasional cameo by Minmay, Lisa or Roy, which is nice fan service. The game is broken down into 5 chapters each with plenty of missions, the first chapter is straight from H.G. Macross with the missions named after the episodes of the show, "Booby Trap", "Countdown", "Bursting Point", and "Force of Arms". After that though Battlecry goes off on it's own timeline which takes place at the same time as Space War I.
There was more than just flying around in a Valkyrie (veritech) that made the show such a cult classic, there was the human element of love, loss, music that brought emotion.
Robotech Battlecry kinda skims the surface as far as that's concerned and puts most of it's focus on a flight sim that allows the player to "transform" into 3 modes while escorting, scouting or defending members of the RDF all while blowing up Zentradi. Each configuration of the veritech offers unique advantages/disadvantages over the other and each are almost specific to the type of mission you're on. The developers, Vicious Cycle, did a commendable job with the Veritech animations, and the overall look and feel is true to the series. The game does suffer from the feeling of repetitiveness but yet it offers plenty of reply value to collect all the RDF metals which unlock maps in two player, different paint schemes, armored veritech and cast interviews. The cast interviews are pathetic compared to the extras on games such as Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. It feels like a total afterthought, there's one with Rebecca Forstadt (voice of HG Minmay) where she's sitting in a patio chair in the back of some building and you have to struggle to hear her over the passing public bus! AWFUL!!! Another thing that the game really needed was a controllable camera, some missions really suffered from not being able to move the camera, it becomes very annoying being shot at from a blind spot and having to change to a more maneuverable mode to manipulate the camera so you can find the enemy shooting at you. The story itself isn't very gripping either, nor was the main antagonists Gorian, Skardde and Zeraal.
And your reward for beating the final boss and finishing the game.....I won't tell ya but it's gotta be a first in video game history. I understand what they were trying to do, but I don't think it worked and was totally anti climatic.
I think only fans that grew up with Robotech will stick with this title till the end...
