Game Review SSX 2012

I got 2 hours of playtime in last night, here are my initial impressions:
Wow the game speed is FAST and FURIOUS!
In this new SSX the controls are totally, completely different from the original SSX and SSX3... thank god for the World Tour Mode (Extended Training Mode). The classic SSX controls are available but I recommend suffering through a couple hours of learning the new control scheme, the game was built around them not the old school controls.
Remember lil Griff Simmons from SSX3? He's a dick in this game,  Elise doesn't seem to be the Blonde Bombshell she was back in the day, and Zoe (you start with her) seems toned down as well.
It was awesome hearing DJ Atomika in the intro of the game! Regrettably he is only in the World tour mode, speaking of which, World Tour Mode and the Deadly Decents (single player mode) is absolutely stupid and a colossal failure, the Deadly Decents may have seemed like a really great idea to add something fresh and new to the game but the execution is such a dramatic departure from  SSX game play it feels like a totally different game.
There seems to be much less emphasis on the tricks and more on survival gear and speed. As I stated above I think the whole survival aspect sounded interesting but there's far too much emphasis on it and not enough on the crazy cool customizable tricks from SSX3 and Tricky.
And the characters don't have that special individuality that each character had in SSX, Tricky and SSX3. In this game they seem very muted and not at all the over the top, BIG celb status characters we know and love.
The soundtrack, which in past games has been so good I bought the sound track, is good but I still prefer the SSX3 soundtrack, one cool option is this SSX supports custom soundtracks so you could simply play the SSX3 soundtrack!

The environments really give the feeling your carving up the powder on a real mountain...so cudos to EA's Mountain Man software. I do have a few issues with the environment though, when Batty said this SSX wouldn't have invisible walls and we would be able to ride "anywhere" I was psyched but the games physics seem too lenient  and far too many times I flew off a cliff, and instead of rewinding I tried saving myself by using the wingsuit to only smack against a sheer vertical cliff side and begin riding it into the abyss...O.o. And I am no fan of the rewind option at all, I'd rather have invisible walls or at least make the tracks a little less prone to cliff side suicides. I appreciate the level of realism to all the drops but I wish they had included the yellow/orange/red snowflakes, billboards, fireworks and the stadium stands. As it is the drops are impressively realistic but very bleak and lacking in the "uber fun" department.
My other issue which I'm sure will become a non issue once I feel more comfortable with the controls is the prewind before a jump, I've read a few complaints over at Merqurycity.com regarding this same issue.
Unlike previous SSX installments the core of the game experience is online between Explore mode and Global Events. Explore Mode is as close to Free Ride as you get in this game, you can access most drops on the planet free of charge and just ride but your friends can ride against your ghost and post a better time and if they beat your time they can earn XP and SSX creds just like in Global Events. So you can earn some creds if you post a really good time on a run and your friends attempt to beat it but fail. Another way to earn credits is by placing Geo Tags during your run in really "tricky" locations....so say you get some serious air off a hidden route just rewind to the apex point and place that geo tag....there is a maturity time on them if they're not claimed which will net you max creds, so it pays to put em in hard to reach locations.
Now Global Events are similar to Explore Mode but you're racing/tricking/surviving against anyone else who joins the event. Events can be, as mentioned, racing, tricks or survival and certain conditions can be set such as equipment level/equipment requirements/ buy in (some events cost to join) and character level etc.
And depending how well you do is how much of the of the pot you'll take. Some global events pots have exceeded 1 million creds! so getting that coveted Diamond placing nets you a 1 to 1 payout!
Like Explore mode you don't actually race in real time against other players you race against players ghosts...this is a double edged sword....you don't get the thrill of real time competition but you do get the convienence of being able to "compete" against others at your convenience.

In conclusion, SSX 2012 is close to what die hard fans have been looking for since SSX3,
The World Tour story and the 9 Deadly Descents is awful, take your ice ax's and wing suits and shove em up your ass!
The music isn't as memorable as SSX3...thank goodness for custom soundtracks!
DJ Atomika needs more "air" time versus the chopper pilots.
The drops are varied and beautifully realistic (kudos to Mountain Man) but need more color ie: fireworks/ billboards
The SSX crew seems less fun....too dam serious.
I miss the customizable Ubers and Super Ubers!
I miss the fun customizable outfits....Griffs Space suit??Elises Bunny ears???SSX 3000 board,
Biggest offense= No Allegra!!! WHAAAAT????
No real time vs racing...
Thanks for including classic controls but regrettably they don't work well in this game :/
Rewinds=Meh
Cliffs= Bah!
Community-centric focus for the online aspect is great!
Ridernet is cool!

7/10 multiplayer
2/10 single player (World Tour Mode)

Merqury City Exclusive: SSX Global Events Explained in more detail with Todd Batty

There's an exclusive video on MercuryCity.com that better explains Global events and how setting up events works via Ridernet. The video tutorial is very in depth and I think explains how "live" competion works in the upcoming SSX. I really think World Tour is gonna be a small part of the overall game and the meat n potatoes is gonna be on line ala CoD.
Check out the video at merqurycity.com .

Uber Monday Moby Jones: SuperBman Barspin

It's Uber Monday folks and this week Moby demonstrates his SuperBman Barspin. He's just such a bad ass he throws his board out of the heli. He's lucky it was soft powder there and not ice or Moby's ass would be walking down the mountain.

SSX Online Features Producer Video part 2

And here's the second part of Todd Batty's Online features videos....annnnd no lobbies Ala SSX3. Lotta people are gonna be disappointed!
I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
Todd also touches on the Geo tag feature, personally I wish they had made the symbol the BIG snowflakes from SSX3....but that's just aesthetics.

SSX X-Games TV spot

OMG a PS3 exclusive!? I thought only XBox got exclusive content....(that's sarcasm kids) Mt Fuji for the PS3 (for now) NICE!
I really liked the pacing of the video and the editing with the multiple windows all going on at once...it kinda reminded me of the GTA box art but in motion.
I'm really looking forward to this game I hope it does well in sales!

SSX: Online features producer video pt 1

Todd Batty discusses one aspect of the SSX online component, explore where players can compete with their friends on their own schedule via Ridernet which alerts you to a friends best ride or if they tried and failed to beat your best time on a drop. This is a great way to enjoy the competitive nature of racing on your own time!

EA has posted yet another trailer for SSX today. The game looks absolutely amazing, the one thing I haven't heard of before is geotags, I think they are going to be the equivalent of SSX3's snowflakes. The wait is killing me!!!

Free Swims 12 games for 2012

2012 has alot of promising games coming and I'm hoping the Mayans just got lazy. Below is my list of  most anticipated games for the year, Some people will call me insane with the order, putting SSX ahead of ME3, and Twisted Metal above GTA V! Don't get me wrong Mass Effect 2 was awesome but I've been hoping and waiting for a good successor to SSX3 forever!!! Same goes for Twisted Metal, I enjoyed TMB but the ad hoc multiplayer was too little too late on the PS2, and to be honest I despised GTA IV so I'm keeping my expectations in check with GTA V. So without further ado here is my list of "Day 1 purchases" for 2012.

#1 I've been waiting 9 years for a new SSX that is a worthy successor to SSX3, I hope this is it! I've been following this game very closely since it was announced and we are now 54 days from launch! My only concern is I haven't seen any half pipes, bleachers, fireworks, or life other than the SSX crew in any of the video's Batty and EA have released thus far.
I only have 2 requests Allegra & DJ Atomica, now!

#2 on my list is Mass Effect 3, I loved ME2 and wish that the original could somehow be made available on the PS3. Regardless whether Bioware adds multiplayer or not this is a definate must have day 1 title.

#3 is on my list is one of the Playstation's longest running franchises, Twisted Metal!
TMB rescued the franchise on the PS2, the game was solid and as a fan myself really took the car combat genre and made it serious...although I missed blowing up the Eiffel Tower...
The multiplayer looks like a it will be a significant aspect of the game much like some major FPS out there. I just hope the single player experience isn't left on the sidelines.

I put the PS Vita launch title Gravity Daze at #4, above many "S rank" titles like Final Fantasy XIII-2, GTA V and Tomb Raider first and foremost because it's a completely new IP and the game's visuals and incorporation of the Vita's tech really make's this title unique and in my opinion the best reason to buy a Vita at launch.

In the #5 spot in my list is Street Fighter X Tekken, I'm still actively playing SSFIV AE 2012, and I can't seem to break my hypenosis with Capcom's fighting games...SXT could slip lower on my list due to a few things lingering in the back of my mind, first is how long after SXT releases will the "Super" / "ultimate" edition be announced? And WTF is up with those dam gems! Gems are for N00Bs!

#6 on my list is FFXIII-2, Unlike most major game sites I didn't have a problem with FFXIII's linear game play for two reasons; it re-emphasized the story line of a group trying to make their own fate vs a predetermined life...even though up to the very end of the story it was all pre destined anyway. It wasn't until they defeat Barthandelus and Orphan they they gain the freedom to forge their own fate. And I think Square Enix wanted to keep the storyline in check after the problems FFXII ran into mid development.
I loved FFX but never picked up FFX-2, I look at FFXIII-2 as Square apologizing and saying "look we can do a better job"....I wish Vs XIII would finally be announced!

#7 on my list is GTA V, As mentioned already I'm keeping my expectations in check due to my experience with GTA IV. I remember how hyped I was with all the coverage from the different gaming sites and then I met Niko Belic and his cousin Roman...meh

Some Franchises get the "reimagined" treatment and don't need it and are thus rejected by the fans, I'm actually hoping my #8 choice does get the "re imagining" treatment, I think this franchise REALLY needs it. If the trailer is any idication Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix (WTF!?) might just breathe new life in the world of Lara Croft.
I also have a sneaking suspicion this game will have RPG elements, HP, weapon creation ect...
I want to see some actual game play footage!

Until War for Cybertron came out I never bought a game based on the Transformers universe, but the folks at Full Moon really impressed me with WFC, the game play, story line and apparent knowledge of the Transformers G1 lore.
My #9 choice, Fall of Cybertron, it has Dinobots...what else do I need to say?!

My #10 pick for 2012 is Star Hawk, I never played the PS3 Warhawk, but I did own Warhawk for the PS1 waaay back when.
The reason I have StarHawk on the list is because I'm actually pretty tired of the whole FPS genre and it seems Zipper Interactive can't seem to find what made Socom 1 & 2 so great. I think StarHawk may fill the void nicely...

I only stumbled upon this traditional 2D fighter a month or 2 ago but it looks really fun. I recently read on Shoryuken that it's getting a console release....I doubt it will make it stateside but if it does I may check it out...Aquapazza grabs the #11 spot.

My final spot for 2012 is a tie between an MMO and a quasi MMO...Waku should be breaking outta beta soon and looks like a great game to return to the MMO scene I love the art direction. Wakfu just looks fun and takes itself a little less serious than other MMO's but doesn't lose the enjoyment of MMO's.

The other game is Journey by That Game Company, from what I know the idea sounds interesting..."An online line game that doesn't fit in with the traditional confines of multiplayer games". Ok you have my interest.......

SSX: Surviving Travis Rice's World

EA just put out a new video for SSX starring Travis Rice, I guess he'll be in the game to some extent.

SSX Massive World Producer Video with Todd Batty Pt3

In the third massive world video with Todd Batty and art director Geoff Coates we are shown Kilimanjaro in Africa where the deadly descent is......darkness @.@...ok I wonder if that was done on purpose. Next is The Rockies where you'll be avoiding trees, grinding power lines and a train wreck and finally The Alps where you'll be trying to avoid large rocks and boulders as you're carving the powder!

SSX Interview with Creative Director Todd Batty

Another interview with SSX creative director Todd Batty discussing the "Survive It" aspect of the game and how each character is equipped to handle a specific deadly decent.
He also touches on the multiplayer aspect a bit and mentions that EA is looking at SSX for the PS Vita!
