1 Step Forward 2 Steps Back

So some of my friends have jumped on the next gen (now current gen) bandwagon and bought PS4's, I am sitting on a backlog of games I still want to start and or complete before moving on up to a deluxe console in the sky. LAst week I plucked down $20 on my PSN account and picked up a couple things, first I picked Legend of Mana, this gem from the PS1 era...hence 2 steps back. I had bought this game back in 2000...13+ years ago....DAMN that makes me feel old! And when I played it then I was kinda disapointed, I guess I was looking for something more akin to the original, Secret of Mana.

Which happened to be my very first RPG I ever played. The game is gorgeous which is truly a testament to it's quality visually and audibly...I find myself retreating from the chaos of GTA V and the frustration of trying to get back in fighting shape for USFIV with SSFIV AE with this 13 year old gem!
And it was only $5.99! So while my friends are rushing head first into the new gen, I decide to go old school...

Next I bought the Okami HD dynamic theme that just came out....vurrry purdy!

If you're on my PSN friends list you know I have about six different Chun Li avatars I switch between on the regular plus some others like RDR, Hyper Dimension Neptunia, so I picked up one GTA V avatar....guess which one.

Being the nice guy I am I let my wife buy something on the PS Store, I figured she'd get some PS mini game like candy crush or something.....nope.
She bought this....

Fat Princess Review

Fat Princess is now available on the PSN exclusively, go buy it!
Underneath it's adorable super deformed characters there's a very well designed strategy game! Teamwork is essential to winning, 2 teams of up to 16 players each must make there way across battlefields to the opposing teams castle and rescue their princess while keeping the other teams princess imprisoned (capture the flag). Once one team has both a count down begins and if they can hold on to both for the duration that team will be victorious! Fat Princesses has 5 classes for players to choose from; Warrior, Worker, Mage, Priest, and Ranger. Each class offers unique benefits and each class can be upgraded. Most people will want to grab a Warrior hat and run headfirst into battle to save the princess, but remember that sometimes the best offense is a good defence. Worker may seem like a drag but it may actually be the most critical character early on in the battle. Workers will build the castle doors and harvest the natural resources needed to upgrade the 5 classes as well as build castle upgrades such as catapults. There are outposts spread throughout the land that if occupied can help turn the tide of battle, outposts serve as a base to heal players and workers can deposit resources (wood and ore) to build up your teams stockpile. Each class requires a certain amount of wood and ore before the worker can upgrade the class or castle structure, once the required resources are collected a worker will begin building. Warrior, as is always the case, carries a large sword and hits hard if you can get within striking range, Mage casts fire spells and when upgraded can cast ice spells, Ranger carries a bow and upgrades to a rifle, great at long distance but your toast if a warrior get up close and personal, and lastly is Priest, the healer who can be upgraded to Dark Mage.
The game oozes with charm and pure fun, from the adorable voices of the warriors to the voice actor (sounds like the same person who did Disney's Beauty and the Beast) who does the games monologue as well as the play by plays to the Princesses begging for cake.
Speaking of cake, that must be one delicious cake and the princess has one serious sweet tooth which adds another strategy to the game, feed your prisoner enough cake and she gets fat....really fat. So fat you will need more than teammate to carry her back to the castle, which adds to the team work aspect of the game.
If your looking for some delicious medieval fun with tons of calories and a low price you can't go wrong with this PSN exclusive title. It's only $14.99 on the PlayStation Store go grab it today....you'll have a hard time putting it down! The icing on the cake (get it?) is the song chosen for the end credits! Pure genius!

Capcom <3's PSN

<3's

After last weeks MVC2 announcement now we get word that Capcom is gonna be dropping between 20 and 40 tiltles on the PSN! I guess patience is a virtue!
We'll definitely be looking at a lot of titles that have things like Street Fighter and Resident Evil in the title. We're thinking about putting together a long list of the titles we're looking at, and then releasing it on Capcom Unity and having people vote on them. Ultimately we're looking at bringing between 20 and 40 titles to the PSN over the next several months."

Socom Confrontation Trophies

Since the beta I haven't actually played SOCOM Confrontation, After reading all the complaints from guys in my clan I held off on buying it, but after months of constant nagging I broke down and bought it on monday. With the up coming 1.30 there's alot of useful patches and upgrades, such as being able to use the D-pad iso the sixaxis motion control, and trophies! I've taken a glimpse at the requirements for achieving these trophies and let me tell you, I've been playing the socom games since S1and these are HARDcore!

Playstation Home: First Impressions

So I completed the DL this AM and made me, the system gives some decent customization options for recreating your face, the options for hair color and style seem a bit limited, especially for females...no long hair option??? How hard would it have been to take one of those books in a unisex hair salon and duplicate every style? My Harbor Studio has a nice view but I couldn't throw my art deco furniture over the balcony...darn.Before I left my studio I familiarized my self with all the emotes, I'm impressed with the amount and variety of emotes...do the robot and talk to the hand at the same time...made me smile in approval. The comm system is great hold R2 to talk via headset and just type away for texting, if you don't have a USB keybord or headset hit L1 for pre formatted messages or use the PS3's built in keybord (slow). As far as curse words, they get the astrik treatment...although I didn't test l33t text...
Start brings up your triquarter thingie (looks like a PSP in other peoples hands) this little dodad has a lot of uses like warping to a differnent area of Home, calling a friend, inviting a friend to where you are and more (can't remember now).
Before I started to explore Home I DL'd all the zones while in my studio then I headed to the theater, grabbed a seat and sat while the movie trailer was DLing (Optimum or Fios will definately make the wait a lot less painful compared to my Verizon DSL) Got an invite from a guy in my clan, pulled out my trusty triquarter and warped to the mall. Here is the core of the Home experience....you can set up a chat room with your PS3 where up to 9 friends can chat and if you have a PS Eye you can video chat...with Home every PS3 owner is in this virtual environment and can communicate with anyone, this open ended environment can trully build the Playstation community beyond your basic friends list. The one thing I was a little disapointed in was the fact developer zones like Sully's bar didn't seem "connected" to the rest of the Home areas which kinda takes you out of the cyber reality of the landscape of Home. So I'm at the mall now talking to one of the guys in my clan via my headset and text, he shows me the new sweatshirt he bought in one of the stores in the mall...$00.50 for a virtual sweatshirt, I laughed thinking of the repercusions if my wife found out I spent real money on a virtual sweatshirt! The real estate store was open and I could've dropped $4.99 on a summer home...prices seem a little off in home...$00.50 for a sweatshirt and only 10X that for a summer house! Maybe that's where we're headed with the RL economy...with all the sweatshirts my wife and I have we'll be owning an island in the carribean soon! I think conversations are proximity based meaning people walking by would hear our conversation. As I talked with my my clanmate I couldn't help but compare Home to your typical message board, the mall being a section of a message board such as a Video Games section and the we were having a conversation about Home so you could compare it to me and my clanmate talking about CoD4 in the CoD4 thread of a message board. Same concept, different application. Then I thought to myself as dozens and dozens of people interacted...where's the mods? The Mr. Smiths of Home...
All in all Home is potentially a new way for people to meet online and participate in community based activities. There is also unlimited potential for Home to generate RL revenue via advertising and micro transactions. I'm looking forward to more publishers embracing Home and using it to promote their games with game-centric zones such as Sully's Bar and special events where Home owners can acquire unique items to showcase how involved they are in home. And Capcom....if by some miracle you're reading this make Chun Li's stage as an area in home to promote Street Fighter IV! And If EA BIG makes another SSX game make a Ski Lodge with a store where we can purchase boards and equipment to use within the game...and an Elise lamp or statue to buy for our homes! So many ideas I could go on and on...

Mama I'm coming Home!

PS home has been in development for so long now I can't remember when I first read about it. I've seen all of Sony's video's showcasing Home, from the TV being thrown down the stairs to the avatar creation vids, to the aimless wanderings throughtout Home from your "Home" to the mall, to the theater and arcade area's. I've lurked in the Playstation.com Home forums hoping to read a legit post regarding a release but that never happened. Little by little my friends began recieving invites to the beta...I even downloaded that gawd awful Home theme in hopes to find a "golden ticket" into Home in my email...alas I was never able to join my friends in Sony's digital eden, or as some call it Sony's 2nd life/sims spinoff.
Sony has promised that Home will open before 2009 which leaves them 21 days to keep their promise....
UPDATE 12/10/08
Well looks like Sony will be keeping their promise, the doors to Home will open tomorrow for all PS3 owners!

Mog Houses...they ain't what they used to be!

See you on the streets

It’s a brisk fall day, as Krog and I drive up the hill towards our destination, I bring up the matches we had a few days prior and what we could do differently if the girl who plays Blanka is there or that Japanese dude that spams the Shoryuken. As we park the car and head towards the doors I feel my anxiety rise…or is that my chi? Krog boasts about how he pummeled the guy playing Zangeif and how he was totally feeling his Krojo after knocking the guy playing Guile off his win streak. The chill of the air and the light of the afternoon sun fade as the sounds of HADOKEN’s and YOU WIN’s fill the stuffy air of the arcade, as we walk through the door way a wall of Street Fighter II cabinets form wall of neon, electronic euphoria. I reach into my pocket and grab a ten and slide it into the change machine, like a crack addict my hands begin to shake with excitement, I meet up with Krog at one of the machines where there’s room to put our quarters down….only five matches ahead of us. We watch as challenger faces off against the current leader of the machine…I study his methods…looking for patterns, patterns that I can exploit. My turn arrives and I throw my quarters in and scroll to my primary fighter…the one I am most familiar with…the first lady of fighting games…

As the announcer says READY…I get into position, run my fingers over the six buttons and get a comfortable grasp on the joystick, my mind is racing on what my first move will be…vertical jump forward, play offensive or jump backwards and turtle? Perhaps a straight vertical jump or risk a Spinning Bird kick from the getgo to let him know I know how to play the Chunster…..FIGHT! The cheering and noise fade away as the match gets underway, I slip into a sort of tunnel vision as all I’m aware of is my health bar and how my opponent is doing, where’s the opening to get a punch in or a kick…do I have enough health to risk the Spinning Bird again I got him with it twice…should I switch up my style and go on defense…I have the lead…how much time is left…how much of a lead do I have…
The match comes to an end and the dull sounds of the crowd flow back into the room, Krog cheers me on as he drops his quarters in to challenge me, the experience starts again but now the trash talking ensues…
That is what it was like during the early 90’s when Street Fighter II rejuvenated the US arcade scene.
Come tomorrow Capcom will launch SSFIITHDR on the PSN. I have waited a looooong time for this game to be playable online. Why do I love Street Fighter so much? I don’t know but there’s a competitive spirit that burns in me every single time I play Krog, it drives me and makes me play harder than usual. The best analogy is the competitive nature between Ken and Ryu seen in the story line and the anime’s. And in the end it’s pure fun.
So Krog I’ll see you in the streets… ^_^

Game Review: 1942 Joint Strike

After reading about the awesome features 1942 Joint Strike has I DL'd it from the PSN as soon as I could. HD graphics, Online co op...retro gaming in the HD era!
The graphics are very polished the game has a muted earth tone look to it but considering the era it works. Boss's are large and unique, they offer a decent challenge to defeat them.
The sound effects are crisp and are reminiscent of the old school games from this series.
Now to the negatives....The game is extremely short, once you defeat the final stage you will be flying the friendly skies of the first stage again but with an amped difficulty. The game becomes very repetitive, and the BIGGEST problem with this game is it primary selling point and it's in the actual title, JOINT STRIKE! I never once was able to connect with ANYONE to play the game co-operatively!  The hype was about the amazing power up's you and a wing man can unleash when working in tandem.....never got to witness that. :/

E3 08 Sony Montage

I really think this would make a great commercial for Sony. It's the stuff that makes fanboys raise their controllers in the air in unison and cheer thunderously!
Enjoy.

Super Puzzle Fighter II

Way back when the PS1 was coming out with a new "must have" title every week I picked up a little puzzle game from Capcom, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, it was your run of the mill puzzle game but it had ultra cute, super deformed versions of characters from Capcom's Street Fighter and Dark Stalkers franchises. You could choose from Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Sakura from Street Fighter or Morrigan, Felicia, Hsein-Ko, Donovan from Dark Stalkers and battle your way to the final "boss". The game droped pairs of colored gems that could be grouped together to form larger gems of the same color, to destroy these gems a "bomb" would randomly come in a pair and by making contact with the matching color you would destroy the gem. After destroying a gem or a gem cluster you'd drop a layer of countdown gems on your opponent, each character had a unique "drop pattern" so this could throw off your opponents plans if suddenly they're giant gem was no longer acessable and they had to wait three seconds for the droped gems to become vunerable to bombs. At first the game seems simplistic, but don't let the adorable super deformed characters fool you this puzzle game is deep and against a player that knows your characters drop pattern they could use your drops against you.
With the advent of high definition Capcom has gone back to the drawing board (literally) and with the help of Backbone entertainment and Udon artists have painstakeingly redrawn every single character, background, and effect and made it 1080p resolution! The game is absolutely gorgeous to look at and plays even better than the original, the sound is crisp clear and loud. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is available on the PSN and XBLA for only $9.99, pick it up today and test your puzzle fighting skills online. It's addictive simple fun!
